songs i'm finding it in me to ramble about

• these are not the days of our lives by yr poetry has been on repeat for me all day. i probably should have fallen in love with this song alot earlier, given that yr poetry is basically raw-er johnny foreigner minus bass player Kelly and guitar player Lewes. Admittedly, i haven't yet really given this project the attention that you'd expect from a self-proclaimed jofo stan, but better late than never i suppose. To actually speak on the song, i love the prechoruses with this slidey guitar effect. The verses are remarkably simple for an Alexei guitar part. I mean, they're literally just one power chord -- sparse in the first verse and with a bit of a drummey rhythm in the second and third. Then the choruses hit and --johnny foreigner have championed the 3+3+2 bar breakdown (in songs like criminals or if i'm the most famous boy you've fucked..., for instance) and always made it sound fresh and exciting -- here in these are not the days... yr poetry tap into the 3+3+2 rhythm again but they drop the guitar on each even numbered one to give the hook forward momentum, and i think that's a pretty neat spin on that formula.
  Rating: "i wish i knew the lyrics so i can belt along to this in my car" / 10
• ABSOLUTELYCRANKINMYMF'INHOG by bilmuri was my most played song on Spotify in 2021 but i'm bringing it up again now because i'm going to see bilmuri live pretty soon (this happened already). this song kinda broke something in my brain the first time i heard it and i don't want to spoil too much but. that guitar solo towards the end is everything. i'm pretty sure when i heard that the very first time i thought to myself something along the lines of "THIS HAS ABSOLUTELY NO RIGHT TO WORK AT ALL. AND YET IT DOES." This is to say nothing of the two (memey) samples that show up in the song.
  It's just a great track overflowing with creativity.
• recommendation by Mirah fits in firmly with those cute synthy songs that sound like myspace and tumblr had a baby that i've been such a fan of lately. and i promise i didn't only put it here because of its title. It'd be pretty standard fare for my taste but what's so wild to me is that this song apparently dropped in like, 2002, which makes it really ahead of its time in my book. i don't know alot of music because i'm so damn picky, but i really don't think anyone was going for the sound in 2002 so this is just so superb. also, it's catchy as fuck.
• Lonely Weekend cover by NNAMDÏ (orignal by Kacey Musgraves) - i've talked kinda vaguely about NNAMDÏ here and there on this site but never given him the attention he really deserves on here. even this little entry is insufficient, but this is an incredible cover of an already great song. it's just beaming with creativity and importantly, love for the source material. if you've never heard a NNAMDÏ track before, even though this is a cover it's a pretty great place to start.
• I do this all the time by Self Esteem is such a great fucking song. i was reluctant to put it here at first, mainly because i seem to have overwhelmingly placed spoken-word vocal songs on this site, and i don't want to give people the impression that that's all i listen to. but honestly, i'd be wrong to not put it here. to actually say something about the song, it kinda feels like Pat Benatar's Love Is A Battlefield but for the modern day, and listening to it makes me feel less guilty about just existing. i only wish i found it sooner.
• twelve by ¡forward russia! is such a fun song. i anticipate the singer's vocals style might take some a bit to get used to but make no mistake, this song is a banger. every now and then, because of this song i try to look more into dance-punk as a genre but i never find anything i like as much as this: basically something that sounds like a dancey at the drive-in. i couldn't segue into this naturally, like most people with irregular time signatures, but this song also alternates between 4/4 and 3/4 alot of the time and it doesn't sound unnatural, manufactured, or unfun the way most prog does. i rate this song twelve / 10.
• dry lips by lightspeed champion. i go alot more in-depth here, but the short is that it's an ostensibly chipper-sounding song with a great build-up and climax.
• scratchcard lanyard by dry cleaning is a ton of fun. the first time i heard it, i thought it sounded distinctly... gorillaz-like. especially in how the drums start off, and in how Florence Shaw's vocals kinda have that same monotone that gorillaz's 2d has in songs like rhinestone eyes. one time i started this song up in the car with my wife, and she gave me this look that said "you're overplaying this one." so i got her hand and put it on my head right before the "pat dad on the head" line. that was a ton of fun too, and she couldn't help but laugh. i also bring up "i've come to join your knitting circle" everytime she goes to her knitting circle.
• shit christmas by yr friends is a good song if you have or think you might have seasonal affective disorder, and youre driving home from work and its only 5:30 but it's already dark outside
